Dry Bones

The blaring of horns, a compressor running a concrete splitting jackhammer, and sirens shouting out their warnings, assaulted my ears as I stepped onto the New York City street. I joined the flow of humanity navigating the narrow sidewalks and began to relax while taking in my surroundings. There was the young father holding up foot traffic as he leisurely pushed a stroller amid the trees and flowers lining the walk in the flower district. I noticed a young woman pushing a cart laden with purchases, accompanied by an older woman trying to guide her path through the crowd. Everywhere I looked, the street was lined with people, all hurrying somewhere, most with blank expressions on their faces, making no eye contact – so many people.

Looking at the blank faces passing by, I began to wonder how many of these people were merely dry bones, people without true life in them? Oh, they walked, talked and went about their business, but were they truly alive? How many desperately needed CPR, and who was going to give it to them? And in the back of my mind, speaking to my heart, came the words, “You must.”

Everyday, whether in New York City or Anytown, USA, we walk in the midst of a valley of dry bones. Just as in Ezekiel 37:4, God expects us to speak His Word so His Spirit can breathe life into them – heavenly CPR. Sadly, we often just walk alongside these dead, dry bones keeping our life-giving words to ourselves.  We don’t see the people around us as we should. Is it because we can’t, or is it that we won’t allow ourselves to do so? If we saw them, truly saw them, with the eyes of Jesus, then we would be compelled to do something. The clicking, clacking and clanking of their dry bones as they walked beside us, would be screaming in our ears, and we would be unable to ignore it.

It’s time we open our eyes to see and our ears to hear. The Bible tells us we are Christ’s ambassadors, the ones He speaks through to reconcile others to Him – to bring new and eternal life to their dry bones. (2 Corinthians 5:20) We have the words of life and we must speak them. Is it scary? Uncomfortable? Awkward at times? Yes. Will we be rejected? Might we be made fun of, or worse yet, ignored? At times. But none of that matters.

Life is short and getting shorter everyday. We’re running out of time, and for that person clinking and clanking next to us, their time may be even shorter than ours. This is the moment. Share the life-giving words of God. Speak to them of the loving sacrifice, mercy and grace of Jesus Christ. Hold out the hope of the Gospel – the good news of eternal life. We don’t have to chase after or wonder what purpose we’re here for. This is it. We must speak. Time is of the essence. We must speak now.

Meet the Author

I was born and raised in Syracuse, NY and still live in the same area. I always had a love for writing and was involved in the school newspapers and yearbook, and took as many English and Writing classes as possible in school. After graduating from high school, I attended the Newhouse School of Public Communications on a scholarship, but soon changed my major to Music Education and transferred to SUNY Potsdam to attend the Crane School of Music. After graduation, I married my high school sweetheart, and best friend, and soon began our family. We were blessed with two wonderful children, a daughter and a son, and spent the next 18 years raising them. We home schooled both of them through high school and brought them up in the Lord. I was blessed with the opportunity to use my education when I began the first home school concert band in New York State. The band was under my direction for the next seven years, until my children both were in college.
My life then came full circle. Though I had never planned on it, God called me to teaching Ladies’ Bible studies and then back to writing. I have had some articles published in Christian Woman magazine and have written some of my own Bible studies. Looking back, I can see God's work in preparing me for this season of life. He continues to be full of surprises. A few years ago, I was amazed to find God calling me to do some speaking for Him. I answered that call and have spoken at statewide retreats and a retreat in Conway, Arkansas. I love to speak about living passionately for Christ, among other topics. I teach a weekly Ladies' Bible study and continue to step through any doors the Lord opens for me. I am currently working on a book and doing as much writing as I am able. I look forward to sharing God’s word whenever I am asked and am constantly in awe of God and what He is doing in my life.

Turn on the news. What do you see? One bad news st Turn on the news. What do you see? One bad news story followed by dire warnings of looming catastrophe. Look at social media. What do you see? People treating each other with contempt and distrust, not to mention more bad news and dire warnings. Not only is there “nothing new under the sun,” it can sometimes appear there is nothing good under the sun.
⠀
The world seems stuck in this bubble of darkness with no way out. Everywhere we turn, the darkness threatens to envelop us, and all too often, there are people who give into it. They think this is just the way it’s going to be from now on. Things are bad, and they will only get worse. It is easy to think this way, being surrounded by so many dark and negative messages, but the light shines through if we look in the right direction.
⠀
There were many other times when the world was plunged into darkness. In fact, I can think of one day in particular. On that day, an innocent man was tortured and killed while suffering the mocking voices of His people, along with stares dripping with disdain and hatred. At the exact time when He passed from life to death, the day turned into night, and darkness overtook the land. It looked to many like the enemy had won — they were mistaken.
⠀
A few days later, the light once again shone forth. Those who were paying attention saw and were bathed in its glow. Jesus rose from the dead, and once again, light entered the world.
⠀
Today, the world looks bleak. The storm clouds seem to hover ever so close, but if you’re paying attention, you can see the light. Even on the darkest of days, the Son shines through. Jesus is always with us. Look in His direction. You’ll feel the warmth of His light on your face and in your heart. Pick up His Word and let it fill you with hope and light. Yes, the world is dark. It’s time to let the light of Jesus break through.
